Message-ID: <007c01c78f8f$cdf131e0$6600a8c0@nancy4j8on1qrb> I thank everyone for the many calls that we have had to help in the Greensburg area. The Hutchinson District Hot Foods trailers and Salina District Liquids trailer have been requested as soon as they let volunteers in. This may be Monday, or may be later in the week. We will need help manning them when we can get them in. We may be there for several weeks. There will also be need of folks to help with cleanup in this area. I know folks are anxious to help now, just ask them to hold onto that passion, it will be needed later. I will keep this listserv apprised of ways folks can help. There is also need for help with cleanup in the Hutchinson District which had communities affected by this same storm that hit Greensburg Friday night. These areas include Macksville, Trousdale, St. John, Mt. Pleasant, Claflin, Ellinwood. There will be need for people to walk fields and clean up debris and downed trees. Please contact Butch Proffitt, Hutchinson District Disaster Response Co-coordinator, if you can help in one of these areas. (620) 200-2062. The Bishop has issued a special appeal for funds for the Kansas Area Disaster Response Fund. The Fund provides assistance to people who are affected by disasters. The fund is dangerously low following the severe ice and snow storms in western Kansas this January. Your church's offering to this fund is an Advance Special. Please take an offering this Sunday and the coming weeks as we are still in the midst of Tornado Season. Volunteers and volunteer teams are needed for disaster recovery work following the storms in early May that destroyed Greensburg, damaged other Kansas communities and produced flooding in many locations in the state. There are many opportunities available: Office work, clothing distribution centers, Hot Foods Trailer work, walking fields and cleaning up debris. As the recovery progresses we will have construction and repair work available as well. Kansas United Methodist Disaster Recovery Office The Kansas United Methodist Disaster Recovery Office located in Haviland United Methodist Church is coordinating all United Methodist volunteer efforts and providing case management for storm victims in the Kansas West Conference. Paul Burger is the volunteer director of the center. To volunteer for recovery work following the Kansas storms, contact the center at 620-862-5422 or umcrecovery at kswestumc.org. Those wanting to help in the Office, Foods trailer or distribution centers may be able to schedule more immediately. Work teams, however, should be scheduled at least one week in advance. We are scheduling volunteers in our Recovery office for clean-up and walking farm fields to pick up debris left from the tornado. As the recovery effort progresses, volunteers will be needed for construction and repair. We are also scheduling folks to work in the Hutchinson District Hot Foods Trailer feeding folks in Greensburg. Church Distribution Centers- Individual volunteers are also needed to assist with the distribution centers (clothing, personal items, etc.) at Haviland United Methodist Church, 620-862-5267, and at Mullinville United Methodist Church, 620-548-2585. Please contact the churches to volunteer for the distribution centers. Volunteer team information and requirements for all UMC volunteer work At least half of the team members must have had United Methodist or American Red Cross disaster response training. The minimum age is 16. All team members must sign and have notarized our VIM liability release and medical form. There must be at least one adult (older than 21) for every four youth volunteers. Bring all food and drinks that you will need. Remember to bring plenty of water, ice, a first-aid kit, etc. Above all, keep your team focused on sharing Christ's love in ways which make a Christian difference. If your team will only be walking farm fields to pick up debris, disaster response training is not required and the minimum age is 14. Overnight teams additional information Preference will be given to experienced adult teams, due to housing shortage. Overnight teams will be housed at either Haviland or Mullinville United Methodist churches. Some cots will be provided, and you will need your own bedding. There are some RV/trailer hookups available in Haviland. The church kitchens and fellowship halls are available for team use. A refrigerator is available, however you may need to bring ice chests as well. If there are two teams at the church, it will be best to communicate with the other team before your arrival and plan to prepare joint meals. You should plan to bring your groceries with you. If you are scheduled to work in Greensburg, lunches may still be available at the Hutchinson District Hot Foods Trailer. There is no charge for use of the church facilities but donations towards the expenses may be given to the United Methodist Recovery office. Minimum age for overnight teams is 16. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
